Why are the Manual DVD and download no longer available?

Because of Apple and Windows system upgrades, the existing multimedia version of the Manual (physical DVD and download) no longer worked for many users. We therefore decided to publish an expanded multimedia version of the Manual as an online application. If you have previously bought either a download or a physical DVD you can upgrade for a small charge by visiting www.amanualofacupuncture.com

How do I print sections from the Manual?

On some systems (Windows Vista, Windows 7 and OSX 10.6) there can be printing problems.  One way around this is to copy and paste the text into a word processor, and print from there.  Click on the text selection tool ('T' symbol) at the top of the page, click and drag over the text you want to print, and copy/paste the text.  If you want to print images, you can use a free peice of software called ScreenGrab Pro (available from http://www.traction-software.co.uk/screengrabpro/)

When I double-click the desktop icon to launch, it just hangs on the loading screen.

This seems to happen in some rare cases, possibly just on Windows Vista computers.  Try right-clicking on the icon in the toolbar at the bottom of the screen, and selecting 'Exit'.  The application may then load normally.  If this doesn't solve the problem, there may be a conflict between your computer (or software/hardware connected to it) and the Securom anti-piracy system we employ.  Please see the following link for details of how to diagnose these problems: https://support.securom.com/analysis.php

Why does the text look small on my screen?

This application is best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, or close to that. If your screen is set to a much higher resolution than this, text will appear small. To adjust your screen, please refer to your computer manufacturer's instructions.

Why can't I see parts of the screen on my Netbook /mini laptop?

This application is best viewed with a screen resolution of 1024 x 768 pixels, which isn't always available as a default choice on mini laptops.  Please attempt the following to change the settings:

  1. Right-click a blank space on you desktop and then left-click on 'Properties'.
  2. Select the 'Settings' tab and then click on 'Advanced'.  Select the 'Monitor' tab.  Uncheck the 'Hide modes that this monitor cannot display' box (if it is checked) and click 'Apply'.  Click 'OK' to close the 'Advanced settings' window.
  3. On the 'Settings' tab increase the screen resolution to 1024 x 768.  Keep in mind that you may now have to scroll down to see your windows task bar, so you may want to reverse this procedure when not using the DVD-ROM.

If this doesn't work on your computer, you can download the free AppMove application. Double-click to run the file.  After this, run 'A Manual of Acupuncture'.  In order to see hidden parts of the screen, hold down the left 'Alt' key, and use your left mouse button to drag the screen.  Thanks to DeskEx for their help with this.

What does the 'Highlight' button do when viewing the Manual text?

When you perform a search of the Manual, the search term is highlighted within the text. The 'highlight' button simply toggles this highlighting off and on.

What happens if I upgrade my computer and need to move the software?

You can 'revoke' your license at any time by clicking on the 'Start' button in the bottom left corner of your desktop, and navigating to 'All programs' > 'Manual of Acupuncture'.  Then click on 'Revoke serial number' (you need to be connected to the internet).  After a few seconds you should see a message saying the license has been revoked.  You can now re-install on another computer using your original serial number.  If you have trouble with this process please contact jcmdvdsupport@gmail.com including your name and serial number.

Installation problems

Please ensure your computer has a DVD-ROM drive - CD-ROM drives will not work!
The installation process can take some time, especially on slower machines or those with slower DVDRom drives. Please be patient – interrupting the process may cause errors.

If the installer does crash with an error message, or remains inactive for a long time (more than 10 minutes), there could be a conflict between your computer setup and the security system on the disc. Please see the following website for details of how to diagnose the problem:

Crashing/freezing during self-testing sections

There is an error in v1 and v1.1 involving the extra point 'Xiyan', which means custom tests will crash if it is included.  Please avoid using this point in custom tests.  If you are experiencing random crashes using v1.0 or v1.1, please upgrade to v1.2 'disc-free' (see top of page).

We have also had a small number of reports of large tests causing crashes (seemingly only on Netbooks/mini laptops).  This may be a memory issue - please ensure your memory settings are set to 'maximum performance' (or similar wording - see your computer's documentation for details).  If this doesn't fix your problem, currently the only solution is to create two or three smaller custom tests covering the same points.

Videos not playing / sound but no vision

You must have Quicktime installed on your computer in order to view the videos. The Manual of Acupuncture installer should check for this and prompt you to install, but you can also do this manually:

If this doesn't solve your problem, please try the following:

Open Quicktime (with the JCM software closed), and click on the Edit menu > Preferences > Quicktime Preferences > Advanced (tab at top) > Click 'Safe mode (GDI only)'. Then click 'Apply' at the bottom and 'OK'. Re-run the JCM software. This may solve your problem if the video card in your computer is causing conflicts with the software (n.b. you may need to revert this setting in other scenarios if you find Quicktime videos aren't running smoothly).

Other problems

There have been very few reports of other problems. However, if you are experiencing problems not mentioned above, please try deleting the installed folder (called ‘JCMP’ by default), emptying your recycle bin and re-installing. Also, please ensure that you have no other programs running in the background.

On the very rare occasions that we are unable to resolve your problem, if you are unable to use the disc on another computer, you are welcome to return it to your supplier for a full refund.

Troubleshooting

Disk-based version

Why do I have to keep the disc in the drive when using the software?

Unfortunately, previous JCM multimedia products have been subject to illegal copying on a large scale. Because of this, we have had to use a security system which stops copies from being made. Of the affordable security options we explored, in our judgement this system presented the least inconvenience to the user. Please take good care of the disc, but if your copy becomes damaged, therefore making the application unusable, you can send it in for a free replacement.
