Jiao Gu Lan: The Herb of Immortality

Jiao Gu Lan (‘twisting vine orchid’) (Gynostemma pentaphyllum) belongs to the Cucurbitaceae family, which includes cucumber, gourd and melons, though it lacks the characteristic fruit. The plant is indigenous to southern China, northern Vietnam, southern Korea and Japan. It has been used as a folk herb, recommended as a cheap and pleasant-tasting dietary supplement, with a reputation for promoting longevity—hence its Chinese name, the “immortality herb” (Xian Cao).
