The gaiwan 'lidded bowl' was introduced during the Ming dynasty (1368–1644). It was discribed by the great tea master Yu Lu as a special bowl that had to be large enough to accommodate the implements and actions of tea brewing, though compact enough to be held comfortably in the hands for drinking.
Tea connoisseurs and tea lovers alike appreciate the gaiwan because it enables multiple infusions, preserving the tea's aromas and delicate flavours. You can also remove the lid during brewing and use the lid to stir the leaves, allowing you to watch the unfurlling and the recognise the perfect infusion time.
This particular gaiwan is glazed so can be used for different tea varieties. Please handwash and treat with care.
