Since making a cup of tea is clearly too much effort, there is a growing fashion for bottled green tea ($1 billion annual sales in the US), often drunk for its supposed health-giving properties. However a study reported at the 240th National Meeting of the American Chemical Society (ACS) in Boston, Massachusetts has found that bottled tea contains fewer polyphenols than one cup of home-made green or black tea and some even contain such small quantities that you would have to drink 20 bottles to obtain the polyphenols present in one cup of tea. Bottled tea also often contains large amounts of sugar. (American Chemical Society (2010, August 23). Bottled tea beverages may contain fewer polyphenols than brewed tea. ScienceDaily.
