A brief standardised acupuncture treatment can produce a fast and clinically relevant reduction in menopausal symptoms, according to Danish researchers. Seventy women with moderate-to-severe menopausal symptoms were randomised to either acupuncture or a wait list. The intervention group received one ten-minute treatment a week for five consecutive weeks using a standardised western medical acupuncture protocol consisting of Zhongji REN-3, Guanyuan REN-4, and bilateral Diji LIV-8, Sanyinjiao SP-6 and Yinlingquan SP-9. The acupuncture intervention significantly decreased hot flushes, day-and-night sweats, general sweating, menopause-specific sleeping problems, emotional symptoms, physical symptoms, and skin and hair symptoms, compared with the control group at six weeks. The pattern of decrease in hot flushes, emotional symptoms, and skin and hair symptoms was already apparent three weeks into the study.
