Cannabis may be useful in the treatment and prevention of Alzheimer’s disease (AD) report Korean systematic review authors. Nine studies met their inclusion criteria. They found that CBD components were able to suppress elements of the main pathophysiological pathways involved in AD. CBD was able to activate neuroprotective pathways that increased cell survival by preventing cells being damaged by amyloid-beta neurotoxicity and oxidative stress, by reducing production of reactive oxygen species and lipid peroxidation, by inhibiting hyper-phosphirylation of tau protein and acetylcholinesterase, and by stimulating neurogenesis in the hippocampus. The results also suggested that using CBD and THC together could be more useful than using either CBD or THC alone.
