Two weeks of ear acupuncture significantly reduces lumbar and pelvic pain and reduces functional disability in pregnant women. A randomised trial conducted in Spain enrolled 220 pregnant women at 24-36 weeks gestation. Participants were randomly assigned to receive standard obstetric care plus two sessions (over two weeks) of verum ear acupuncture (Shenmen, Kidney, Lumbar), or non-specific ear acupuncture (verum needling at Ankle, Wrist, Shoulder), or placebo ear acupuncture (placebo needle device at Ankle, Wrist, Shoulder), or standard obstetric care alone. Compared with baseline, the reduction in pain intensity in the verum ear acupuncture group versus standard obstetric care was significantly greater. Significant improvements were also found in the verum ear acupuncture group versus standard obstetric care for disability and physical health.
