Electro-acupuncture (EA) may be helpful in treating fatigue in patients with inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), according to a pilot study carried out in Spain. Fifty-two patients with IBD in clinical remission who were experiencing fatigue were randomly assigned to one of three groups: EA, sham EA or a wait list. Patients in the EA and sham EA groups received nine treatment sessions over eight weeks, using 20 acupoints selected according to the principles of traditional Chinese medicine, which were stimulated at 8-100 Hz. Both EA and sham EA reduced fatigue scores in IBD patients when compared to the control group. No differences were observed between EA and sham EA, however the study was not adequately powered to rule out a difference between the two.
