Acupuncture may have a beneficial effect on recovery of consciousness after traumatic brain injury (TBI), according to a systematic review carried out in China. Data from a total of 3511 patients in 49 trials were pooled for meta-analysis, and the results demonstrated that patients in the acupuncture group generally fared better than those in control groups after TBI. Acupuncture was shown to improve consciousness levels evaluated using coma scores and clinical efficacy rates, and was found to be helpful in rehabilitation and lowering mortality rates.
