Acupuncture is as effective as hormone replacement therapy for reducing menopausal vasomotor symptoms, according to a study from Italy. A total of 75 postmenopausal women with hot flushes were randomised to receive hormone replacement therapy, weekly acupuncture sessions or phytoestrogens, for three months. Overall menopause symptom scores declined significantly in all three groups, however vasomotor symptoms declined less with phytoestrogens than either HRT or acupuncture. Three months after the end of the treatment period, symptom reduction continued more in the acupuncture group compared with HRT.
