Acupuncture compares favourably to orthodox medicine and sham acupuncture for treating premenstrual syndrome (PMS), Chinese authors have found. A systematic review of 15 studies, comprising 1103 cases, found that acupuncture led to a higher effective rate for PMS. No significant effect of timing of acupuncture intervention relative to the menstrual cycle was observed. The most used acupoints for PMS treatment were Sanyinjiao SP-6, Taichong LIV-3, and Guanyuan REN-4.
