Acupuncture treatment could be beneficial for chronic constipation in patients who are in a coma following severe traumatic brain injury (TBI). In a retrospective observational study, Japanese clinicians treated 25 TBI patients in a rehabilitation centre with acupuncture twice per week for ten weeks. Acupuncture was initially performed at bilateral Hegu L.I-4 and Zusanli ST-36, Renzhong DU-26 and Yintang M-HN-3, with Baihui DU-20, Shangxing DU-23, Neiguan P-6, Taixi KID-3, Fengchi GB-20 and Taichong LIV-3 added after a few weeks. Frequency of defecation and number of days on which defecation occurred increased significantly after 10 weeks of acupuncture. Need for administration of laxatives also decreased significantly.
