Acupuncture combined with counselling, smoking cessation education or moxibustion is more effective than acupuncture as a monotherapy with regard to smoking cessation, report Chinese authors. Twenty-four (mostly low-quality) trials involving 3984 participants were included in their systematic review. With regard to smoking abstinence, meta-analysis showed that acupuncture was more effective compared to no intervention for short-term (four weeks) and long-term (longer than six months) cessation. Compared to either acupuncture or auricular acupressure alone, acupuncture plus auricular acupressure showed more benefit for short-term cessation. Acupuncture plus auricular acupressure was more effective than sham for short-term and long-term cessation. Acupuncture in combination with counselling, an educational smoking cessation programme or moxibustion had more benefit compared to acupuncture alone for short- and long-term cessation.
