Scalp acupuncture may be an effective treatment for alleviating the symptoms of autism spectrum disorder (ASD), conclude investigators from Hong Kong. In a single-arm observational study, 68 children aged 2-11 with ASD received a total of 30 sessions of scalp acupuncture (Baihui DU-20, Sishencong M-HN-1, midline of forehead, lateral line 2 of forehead, posterior lateral line of vertex, primary auditory cortex and auditory speech area). The results showed significant effects of acupuncture on measures of verbal communication, social and behavioral problems, whereas the domains of food selectivity and auditory sensitivity showed less improvement. Age and onset type of ASD were predictors for the therapeutic effect of acupuncture, with better effect for those patients with natal or early onset of the disorder, and those at a younger age when they received the therapy.
