Modified Si Ni Tang (Frigid Extremities Decoction) can protect liver function and improve the survival rates of patients with hepatitis B virus related acute-on-chronic liver failure. A retrospective cohort study of 121 patients was conducted by Chinese investigators. Patients who had been treated with modified Si Ni Tang along with conventional medicine were assigned to an observation group, while those who had been treated with conventional medicine were selected as the control group. Liver function improved in both groups after treatment, but the effects in the observation group were greater. Overall liver disease scores were better in the observation group compared with the control group post-treatment. At 12 weeks, the mean survival times of the observation group and the control group were 66.7 days and 45.5 days, respectively. Significant improvement of 12-week survival rate (62.9 percent versus 36.0 percent) was observed in the observation group after treatment.
