Tuina is effective for alleviating post-stroke spasticity within three months of stroke onset, report Chinese authors. Four hundred and forty-four stroke patients with upper limb spasticity were randomly assigned to receive either tuina plus conventional rehabilitation, or conventional rehabilitation only. Among patients who had experienced stroke 1-3 months before treatment, the tuina group experienced significantly greater reductions in spasticity scores than the control group, after four weeks of treatment. These improvements were sustained at three- and six-month follow-ups. However, among patients who suffered from stroke 4-12 months before treatment, the change in spasticity with treatment did not differ significantly between those who received tuina and those that did not.
