Auricular-Plaster Therapy for Treatment of IBS

by Ao Xueyan et al

98 patients with IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome) were divided into a treatment group of 60 (29 male and 31 female, average age 46 years, disease duration from 2 to 40 years) and a control group of 38 (11 male and 27 female, average age 44, disease duration from 2 to 30 years). The treatment group had magnetic beads affixed to several ear points, once every other day, with 7 treatments constituting one course of treatment. Each bead was pressed 21 times, 5-6 times a day. The ear points used were Ear Shenmen, Sympathetic, Liver, Large Intestine, Spleen, Kidney, Adrenal Gland and Lung. In addition these patients were given acupressure to Ganshu BL-18, Danshu BL-19, Pishu BL-20, Weishu BL-21 or ahshi points, using both thumbs, pressing during the patient's in-breath and releasing during the out-breath, for 5 minutes each, giving a total treatment time of 20 minutes. The control group was given norfloxacin 0.3g 3 times a day for 30 days. During the study period both groups of patients were prohibited from taking other drugs acting on gastrointestinal function, and asked to avoid foods that might affect the functioning of the digestive tract, and to stay calm. Of the 60 cases in the treatment group, 42 had excellent results, 16 were improved, and treatment failed in 2 cases. In the control group, 16 had excellent results and 16 were improved, with failure in 12 cases. The effective rate for the treatment group was 96% compared with 68% for the control group.
