The Treatment of Common Acute and Chronic Injuries of the Low Back, Hip, and Lower Extremity: a weekend workshop with Whitfield Reaves

The Treatment of Common Acute and Chronic Injuries of the Low Back, Hip, and Lower Extremity: a weekend workshop with Whitfield Reaves

September  5th and 6th 2020, Regent's University London, Inner Circle, Regent's Park, London NW1 4NS

This two-day seminar will cover the most commonly seen injury and pain syndromes in the clinic. For the low back, the quadratus lumborum, the gluteus medius, and the sacral-iliac joint will be presented. Lower extremity conditions include the ilio-tibial band and the plantar fascia.

This course is designed for the practitioner to immediately apply in clinic. Each injury will consist of instruction, demonstration of palpation and point location, and presentation of precise needling techniques. Instruction is designed to be precise and for ease of application.

Practitioners of traditional Chinese medicine now have an abundance of information for the assessment and treatment of pain syndromes, yet it appears that the treatment of patients with pain and injury often lacks precise points and protocols. This seminar features the use of advanced acupuncture techniques in the treatment of common injuries to the low back, hip, and lower extremity.

Both acute and chronic conditions will be covered in this weekend course.Treatment will include the tendino-muscle meridians, opposite side and opposite extremity strategies, and the use of the extraordinary meridians. However, the primary focus will be treating the site of injury with such techniques as threading the tendon, trigger point therapy, and fascial release.

How to diagnose and treat these anatomically significant tissues found in orthopedic and sports acupuncture involves assessment outside of the framework of traditional Chinese medicine. Yet, it is essential in understanding the primary sites of the stagnation of Qi and blood, and therefore, and therefore should lead the practitioner to clinically effective treatments. Whitfield will emphasize orthopedic diagnosis and assessment, skillful palpation, and innovative and precise needle techniques.

Common conditions that acupuncturists see daily in their clinics are covered, so the material is immediately relevant and the techniques can be easily integrated into one’s practice. These include: • Hip bursitis • Treatment of the SI joint • Patello-femoral joint dysfunction of the knee • Achilles tendonitis • Plantar fasciitis.

The material of this seminar is the integration of traditional Chinese acupuncture with western orthopedic and sports medicine. Having spent almost 40 years specializing in the treatment of musculoskeletal disorders, Whitfield’s clinical experience is invaluable for practitioners working with pain. Most unique to his teachings are very precise anatomical treatments to the involved local tissues, which include trigger points, motor points, ligaments, and joint capsules.

Each injury will consists of lecture and demonstration. The objective is to have the attendee more informed about the diagnosis and assessment of these common injuries, as well as confident in their approach to treatment.

Included in this seminar: • Location of the clinically important points of orthopedic and acupuncture sports medicine • Needle techniques, with emphasis on how to assure you are inserting to the correct depth • Key orthopedic tests will be taught, including manual muscle testing • A simple guide to postural considerations and how to treat them with acupuncture
