Nineteen randomised controlled trials were included in this meta-analysis, involving 1510 patients. The authors conclude that Chinese herbal medicine treatment of constipation-predominant irritable bowel syndrome focused on the Liver is more effective than Western medical interventions (drugs such as Cisapride, Mosapride, Polyethylene glycol). However, the authors advise caution regarding this conclusion, as the available evidence was of poor quality. [Oct 2013]
