Symptoms

Ten months since her last period, feeling disorientation, vexation, agitation and irascibility. Overwhelmed with melancholy and unease in the chest. Suffering from hot flushes, insomnia and often alarmed by nightmares; difficult defecation.

Diagnosis

Weak and slightly iregular pulse; white tongue fur, slimy at the root and red in colour.

Pattern Identification

Insufficient function of the liver and kidney; Non-interaction of the heart and kidney.

Principles of Treatment

Calm the heart and relief the depression; Loosen the chest and stabilize the mind.

Prescription 1

  • Shi Chang Pu (Acori Rhizoma) 4.5g
  • Long Chi (Mastodi Dentis Fossilia) 12g
  • Ci Shi ( Magnetitum) 30g
  • Dan Shen (Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix) 9g
  • Yuen Fu Ling (Poria) 12g
  • Zhi Mu (Anemarrhenae Rhizoma) 9g
  • Huang Bai (Phellodendri) 9g
  • Chai Hu (Bupleuri Radix) 4.5g
  • Bai Shao (Paeoniae Radix Alba) 9g
  • Huai Xiao Mai (Tritici Semen Leve) 30g
  • Qing Pi (Citri Exocarpium Immaturum) 4.5g
  • Chen Pi (Citri Exocarpium) 4.5g
  • Quan Gua Lou (Trichosanthis Fructus) 12g
  • Bai Jin Wan (Alum and Curcuma Pill) 4.5g (swallow)
Taken as daily decoction for 7 days. Symptoms subsided immediately after taking the medication, but symptoms returned later. 17 days after the first prescription, pulse still weak and slightly irregular, white tongue
fur, thicker at the root and slightly red in colour.

  • Huai Xiao Mai ( Tritici Semen Leve) 30g
  • Ci Shi ( Magnetitum) 30g
  • Zhu Yuan Zhi ( Polygalea Radix) 4.5g
  • Wu Wei Zi ( Schisandrea Fructus) 2g
  • Dan Shen ( Salviae Miltiorrhizae Radix) 9g
  • Chai Hu ( Bupleuri Radix) 4.5g
  • Qing Pi (Citri Exocarpium Immaturum) 4.5g
  • Chen Pi ( Citri Exocarpium ) 4.5g
  • Quan Gua Lou ( Trichosanthis Fructus) 12g
  • Zhi Mu ( Anemarrhnae Rhizoma ) 9g
  • Huang Bai ( Phellodendri ) 9g
  • Bai Jin Wan ( Alum and Curcuma Pill ) 4.5g (swallow)
Taken as daily decoction for 7 days. 9 days after the second prescription, feeling much better, good in spirit and uninhibited stool.
Pulse still weak, with white thin tongue fur, slightly red in colour, much phlegm and
sliminess in the mouth.

  • Jiang Ban Xia ( Pinelliae Tuber cum Zingibere Praeparatum) 4.5g
  • Bai Jie Zi ( Brassicae Albae Semem) 2.5g
  • Chao Zhi Ke ( Aurantii Fructus) 4.5g
  • Chen Pi ( Citri Exocarpium) 4.5g
  • Shi Chang Pu ( Acori Rhizoma) 4.5 g
  • Long Chi ( Mastodi Dentis Fossilia) 12g
  • Jiang Zhu Ru ( bambusae Caulis in Taeniam) 4.5g
  • Huai Xiao Mai ( Tritici Semen Leve) 30g
Taken as daily decoction for 7 days
  • Together with Zhu Sha An Shen Wan (Cinnabar Spirit-calming pill) 60g (7 days)
  • Bai Jin Wan (Alum and Curcuma Pill ) 20g (7days)
Three months later the patient was in good health and had no recurring symptoms.
