Gastric carcinoma is the fourth most common cancer, with the second highest mortality rate of all malignancies. Gastric precancerous lesions represent a stage in the pathological process of the transformation of normal gastric mucosa to gastric cancer. In this trial 120 patients with gastric pre-cancerous lesions were randomly assigned to receive either Weining granules or Weifuchun Granules for six months. Weining granules include medicinal herbs such as Huang Qi (Astragali Radix), Fu Ling (Poria), Jiang Huang (Rhizoma Curcumae), and Gou Qi Zi (Lycii Fructus) to fortify the Spleen, replenish qi, activate blood and resolve stasis. Weifuchen tablets contain the herbal medicines Hong Shen (Radix Ginseng), Xiang Cha Chai (Isodon) and Zhi Ke (Aurantii Fructus), amongst others. Both groups took herbal medicine daily for two three-month courses. The Weining granule group had a significantly higher overall response rate than the Weifuchen group, including significantly greater improvements in symptoms of gastric pain, distension and anorexia, improvements in the appearance of gastric tissue as seen on gastroscopy, decreased incidence of Helicobacter pylori infection, and improvements across a range of immune markers and quality of life.
