This meta-analysis of the effectiveness of acupuncture for the treatment of functional constipation identified 19 studies involving 1679 participants. The specific details of the acupuncture treatment varied between trials, but many involved electro-stimulation at Tianshu ST-25. Acupuncture was found to be significantly superior to medication therapy (including lactulose, senna, bisacodyl and patent Chinese herbal medicine) as well as significantly less likely to cause adverse effects. A short treatment course of two weeks was found to be sufficient for a good effect. However, the quality of the included trials was poor. [Oct 16]
