Acupuncture Treatment of Chronic Rhinitis in 75 Cases
by Yu Shuzhuang et. al.
The 75 cases (disease duration ranging from 1 to 21 years) were differentiated into cold type, heat type and deficiency cold type, with the cold type predominating. The main points were Fengchi GB-20 and Tongtian BL-7 (inserted slowly with pressure to obtain a warm sensation in cold type and withdrawn slowly without retention to induce a cold sensation in the hot type), plus Hegu L.I.-4, Quchi L.I.-11 and Zusanli ST-36. The following additional points were used: cold type: Fengmen BL-12 and Feishu BL-13 were treated by stick moxibustion; heat type: Yintang (Extra) and Shangxing DU-23 were bled with the three-edged needle; deficiency cold type: Dazhui DU-14 and Feishu BL-13 were treated by moxibustion. Treatment was given every other day. Short-term effects: 30 cases were cured,15 markedly improved and 30 improved. The number of treatments varied from 3 to 35 with 8.3 as an average. Patients that co-operated in having more treatments benefited more. The authors note that patients with dry painful nose additionally benefited from points Naokong GB-19 and Xuanzhong GB-39, those with post-nasal drip from Hegu L.I.-4 and Taichong LIV-3, and those with hypertrophic rhinitis from moxibustion at Tongtian BL-7 and Xinhui DU-22.
